1.) Create a dedicated workspace
Not everybody will have the luxury of having a home office. However, creating a dedicated space for work in your home can be just as effective. It's essential to make a work area within your home, so mentally, you can get into "work mode" when you sit down at the desk. It also helps keep your work equipment in the same location, so it's always at hand when needed.
2.) Have reliable technology
A stable WIFI connection is integral to any home working situation, as is the PC, Laptop, or Mac you will be using. There is nothing worse than constantly getting frustrated with your technology, and it is getting in the way of you performing your job.
3.) Over-communicate
Because you are no longer in the office with your peers and managers, communication is more critical than ever, as it's a lot easier to misscommunicate over emails/texts than in person. Over-communication doesn't mean unnecessary conversations or meetings but more quick check-ins and double confirmations.
4.) Keep a routine
Stay focused and on task by keeping to a routine every day. It's easier to lie in, hit the snooze button, and work all sorts of weird hours. However, we've found that sticking to a standard routine, like a simple 9-5, will generate more consistent results.
5.) Take dedicated breaks
Schedule your lunchtime and coffee breaks into your day and avoid unplanned breaks. This will also generate more consistency and allow you to have the separation needed from your desk each day.
6.) Reduce your distractions
Procrastination is easier than ever while working at home. Reduce your distractions by turning off the TV that's on in the background, closing the tabs on your computer that you don't need, and closing your door to keep relatives or pets out of your office if possible.
7.) Incorporate self-care into your day
With no commute and the potential of cabin fever looming, it's essential to take care of yourself. Get out for walks in your scheduled breaks, exercise in your lunch hour to avoid the feeling of staring at your screen for hours on end, and use your added time at home to prepare nutritious and healthy meals.
8.) Know when to switch off
It's easy to keep checking emails when your office is always at the end of your fingertips. Follow your routine and make yourself unavailable during your hours of downtime. Remember, you are working from home and not living from work.
