A fast-growing engineering consultancy is seeking a Director of Distribution Engineering to lead a team responsible for developing detailed construction work packages for electric distribution systems.
Summary
This leadership role requires a blend of technical expertise, team development, and business strategy. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in overhead (OH), underground (UG), and underground residential distribution (URD) environments.
Your team will work across a variety of projects, including joint use make-ready, street lighting, and more. You’ll oversee the use of tools such as GIS, CAD, and Work Management Systems to ensure high-quality deliverables that align with utility standards and client expectations.
Key Objectives:
- 10–30%: Process improvement, staff mentoring, and training initiatives.
- 20%: Engineering review and quality assurance for design packages.
- 50–70%: Leadership responsibilities including business development, financial oversight (P&L), project planning, and client relationship management.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage project schedules, scopes, and budgets.
- Develop, monitor, and report on performance metrics.
- Ensure adherence to financial targets and key project KPIs.
- Build and scale a high-performing engineering team, including hiring and mentoring senior staff.
- Design and implement organizational strategies to support growth.
- Lead business development efforts and contribute to proposal creation.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for client engagement and relationship management.
Qualifications (Must-Haves):
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution.
- 10+ years of experience in electric distribution engineering (utility or consulting).
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Strong knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and client-specific construction standards.
- Proven success in business development, proposal writing, and project pricing.
- Demonstrated project management experience across all phases (initiation to closeout).
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with experience managing cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PMP certification.
- Experience with secondary network design and urban distribution systems.
- Knowledge of complex distribution systems, including medium voltage switchgear, voltage conversion, and automation projects.
- Civil and electrical design experience related to conduit/cable systems in dense metro areas.
